What is CBD Oil?
CBD Oil is an essential oil extracted from hemp or cannabis flowers or plant material which is rich in CBD or Cannabidiol.
CBD is a cannabinoid which is widely used in the treatment or management of a range of diseases.
CBD Oil is growing in popularity as a result of new research and legal changes that make hemp and cannabis products more accessible and available for medical health and wellness products.

What are CBD Oil Products?
CBD Oil Products are finished products used for medical, therapeutic, health or wellness reasons. CBD Oil products represent an easy, safe and legal way to consume Cannabidiol in many parts of the world. Common examples include CBD Oil Tinctures and CBD Oil capsules.
A growing body of research supports the use of CBD oil in a range of conditions. CBD Oil products are fairly new to the market, and only one (Epidiolex) has been registered to date.
Most CBD Oil products are currently considered as a botancial drug product, herbal extract or natural therapy, and research on their use is limited but promising.
Many health professionals and natural products companies are interested in developing new CBD Oil products to treat a range of conditions and take advantage of this new and growing market.

What are the benefits of CBD Oil Products
A growing body of research suggests CBD Oil Products are a natural, safe and well tolerated treatment for specific conditions. These owe their success to range of benefits of the CBD molecule and other components of CBD oil, which have been confirmed in laboratory research, animal studies and human clinical trials. A growing body of anecdotal patient reports also confirm that many people find benefit from CBD Oil products with minimal side effects.
Currently only one product (Epidolex) has completed clinical trials, and this uses CBD isolate, not CBD Oil.
Clinical Trials Using CBD (Cannabidiol)
There are currently hundreds of research studies and clinical trials currently underway worldwide testing the benefits and safety of CBD Oil for a range of conditions. Many of these are testing CBD in rare diseases and using much higher doses than typically contained in CBD products, so we can not assume that small doses of CBD or inappropriate use will deliver similar results for all patients. Nonetheless these studies have been based laboratory research and clinical experience from thousands of patients and support the widespread anecdotal reports that CBD is effective for a range of conditions.

Remember that research is still new and ongoing, so always seek medical advice from health professionals with first hand experience with CBD. Be wary of products that make medical claims unless these have been supported by clinical trials at appropriate doses.
CBD Should be used as part of a holistic approach to disease following accurate diagnosis and a treatment plan by a medical health professional.
Hemp-Derived CBD Oil
This article mostly focuses on hemp-derived CBD Oil. Hemp, also known as Industrial Hemp, refers to varieties of cannabis which contain high levels of CBD but very little (less than 0.3%) THC – the other main cannabinoid found in hemp and cannabis. CBD Oil Can be derived from non-hemp cannabis plants (such as medical cannabis or recreational cannabis, aka marijuana) but is more highly regulated.
Are CBD Oil Products Legal?
The legal status of CBD Oil products is often complex and poorly understood. Laws are different depending on your state or country.
In general, CBD oil products tend to be legal but regulated.
While CBD oil is often legally considered as hemp, marketing or selling CBD as a medicine or supplement has additional legal implications. This is especially the case when CBD oil products make medical claims such as “treats disease XYZ” or “May help with problem ABC”.
If you are considering manufacturing or selling CBD Oil products you should undertake extensive due diligence to ensure your production, marketing and packaging is compliant.
CBD Oil products are derived from hemp or cannabis – always do your own due diligence to understand the legal and regulatory requirements to buy, produce or consume CBD oil in your region.

Are CBD Oil Products Safe?
CBD Oil is widely held to be safe, but it is a relatively new product and evidence for safety, especially for regular use or use by pregnant or breastfeeding women is missing.
A review by the WHO (World Health Organisation) found that CBD was safe with little potential for abuse.
CBD is often a safer alternative to dangerous and addictive pharmaceutical drugs.
CBD May interact with other medicines and may impact the required dose or metabolism of other drugs. Always seek medical advice before starting a new medication or health regime.
CBD Oil Dosage
CBD oil dosage varies significantly according to the route of administration, the type of preparation, the condition being treated and the specific needs of the patient.
As CBD is a medicine, you should always seek medical advice before starting it and to get advice on dosage.
In general terms, a typical maintenance “wellness” dose is 10-25 mg 1-3 times daily. Serious conditions requiring treatment with CBD often require higher dosage, but should only be undertaken under medical supervision.
Ingredients in CBD Oil Products
CBD Oil products generally contain a concentrated CBD Oil (such as crude hemp oil, refined CBD Oil, CBD Distillate or CBD Isolate) plus a diluent (such as a food grade oil like hemp seed oil, olive oil or coconut oil), flavoring, sweeteners, colors and other ingredients such as essential oils or other therapeutic compounds.
CBD Oil Product Ingredients
- CBD Oil (eg crude hemp extract, CBD Distillate or CBD Isolate)
- Diluent (eg: hemp seed oil, olive oil, or coconut oil)
- Flavoring (eg: mint, cinnamon or orange)
- Sweetener (eg: sugar, natural sweeteners such as Stevia or artificial sweeteners)
- Coloring (less often used as CBD oil is a “natural” type of product)
- Stabilisers and preservatives (not always required)
- Emulsifiers and absorption enhancers (to improve bioavailability)
- Essential oils, herbal extracts and other possibly active ingredients.
Many CBD oil consumers prefer to minimise artificial colours, flavours and other unnecessary ingredients. The simplest CBD Oil products such as tinctures will only contain CBD Oil, vegetable oil and maybe a natural flavour or sweetener such as peppermint oil and stevia.
Types of CBD Oils
There are many different types of CBD Oils and Hemp Extracts used in CBD products.
The most popular types of CBD oil are extracted using ethanol or supercritical carbon dioxide.
CBD Oils are then processed to remove impurities and improve potency, flavour and stability.
As CBD Oil is purified, it loses flavour as terpenes and other compounds are removed.
Crude extracts have the widest range of compounds including plant waxes and pigments which can reduce stability and detract from flavour. These are generally removed during processing.
Most CBD Oil products are made with a refined CBD oil or CBD distillate. These contain most of the therapeutic compounds such as cannabinoids and terpenes, but taste better, look clearer and are more stable than crude hemp extracts.
Full Spectrum CBD Oil
Full Spectrum CBD Oil contains the widest range of cannabinoids and terpenes, and is preferred by many patients and health professionals.
By definition, full spectrum CBD oil contain CBD as well as THC and other cannabinoids. These types of products are widely held to be superior to simpler products such as CBD isolate, and this has been shown in some laboratory research and clinical trials.
Other cannabinoids that may be present in full spectrum products include
- Cannabigerol (CBG)
- Cannabinol (CBN)
- Cannabichromene (CBC)
- Cannabivarin (CBDV)
- And many others, mostly in very low quantities.
The acid forms of these cannabinoids may also be present (THCA, CBDA, CBGA, CBNCA, CBDVA etc)
“THC Free” CBD Oil or NDT CBD Oil
“THC Free” CBD Oil or NDT (Non-detectable) CBD Oil is full spectrum CBD Oil which has had the THC removed to prevent unwanted side effects which may be caused by THC.
By definition, CBD Oil with the THC removed is not “full spectrum”, but some companies still use this marketing. For this reason, other companies prefer to use the more accurate term “non-detectable THC” to refer to these products.
Note also, it is almost impossible to remove all the THC from CBD oil unless you convert it to isolates. Tests used to measure THC levels in products are not as sensitive as those used to detect THC in human blood drug testing, so there may still be a risk of positive drug tests for THC from “THC free” CBD products.
CBD Oil Distillate
CBD Distillate is distilled CBD oil. Distillation is one of the most effective and natural ways to refine and concentrate CBD. CBD Distillate is often the preferred CBD ingredients used in the manufacture of CBD oil products. Some CBD companies refer to their CBD distillate as “CBD Oil”, so the terms are used interchangeably.
THC Free CBD Oil Distillate or NDT CBD Oil Distillate
See “THC Free” CBD Oil or NDT (Non-detectable) CBD Oil above. THC removal is mostly achieved through a combination of distillation and chromatography, so most of these products will actually be distillate, not oil.
Broad Spectrum CBD Oil
Broad Spectrum CBD Oil has become a popular term to describe either NDT/THC free oil, or more commonly, CBD oil that is particularly rich in other cannabinoids other than CBD and THC.
For example a CBD Oil that contains 60% CBD, 0.3% THC, 5% CBG and 5% CBC with abundant terpenes would be a broad spectrum CBD Oil.
Many of the marketing terms used in the hemp and CBD industry are poorly defined and used inconsistently by different companies.
CBD Oil Tinctures
CBD Oil Tinctures are one of the easiest and most popular ways to take CBD oil.
CBD Oil Tinctures contain CBD Oil diluted in a food grade oil (such as hemp oil, olive oil or coconut oil), often with a flavoring (such as mint or orange flavor).
CBD Oil Tinctures typically contain 1% to 10% Cannabidiol by weight (10mg to 100mg/ml) and often come in 30ml (1 fl oz) containers. This translates to a total CBD content per 30ml tincture bottle of 300mg to 3,000 mg. Higher concentrations often have strong flavors which may be unpalatable.
CBD Oil Tinctures make it easy to administer a precise dose of CBD in a convenient and discrete format.
For example, a 1ml dose of a 1% CBD tincture will deliver 10mg of CBD with each dose. By using a syringe you can easily calibrate an exact dose of CBD. THis makes tinctures ideal for patients trying to work out the best dose of CBD.
CBD Oil Tinctures are normally taken sublingually, held for 30-60 seconds, and then swallowed. This allows some mucosal absorption of CBD for more rapid absorption, with the balance swallowed.
CBD Tinctures are the most widely available and easy to use CBD Oil products and are ideal for people new to CBD.
CBD Oil Oral Spray
CBD Oil Oral Spray deliver a metered dose of CBD into the mouth and throat, allowing rapid mucosal absorption and accurate dosing.
CBD Oil Oral sprays contain CBD Oil, a diluent such as a food grade oil, alcohol and/or vegetable glycerine, flavoring and possibly other ingredients to improve flavor, mouth feel and absorption.
Similar to a tincture, CBD Oral sprays have the added benefit of a built-in standard dosing pump to ensure the same dose every time.
Epidiolex, the only pharmaceutical grade CBD drug uses this delivery method (but contains CBD isolate, not CBD oil.).
CBD Oil Capsules
CBD Oil Capsules are hard capsules composed of two pieces which are joined together. CBD Capsules come in a range of sizes and can fit 100mg of CBD or more. Typical dose sizes of CBD are 10mg, 25mg, 50mg and 100mg.
CBD Oil capsules allow intake of significant quantities of CBD oil or powders such as water soluble powder or CBD isolate.
Capsules can also be broken open to apply the contents to food or consume orally.
CBD Oil Softgels
CBD Oil Softgels, also known as gelatine capsules, contain CBD Oil along with a diluent such as food grade oil. CBD Softgels deliver a precise measured dose of CBD and are one of the simplest and most popular ways to take CBD Oil. Softgels are particularly popular with health professionals who are used to capsule and tablets as dosage forms.
Softgels are also a great option for people who don’t like taking oral liquids or who don’t like the flavour or texture of tinctures, such as children or people with swallowing difficulties or sensitivities to oil diluents.
CBD Softgels typically contain a modest dose of CBD Oil such as 10mg or 25 mg. They are normally well priced and represent a familiar, mainstream and accessible option for introducing CBD medicines or supplements.
Softgels may be made with gelatine (animal derived) or from vegan alternatives. Softgels may be coloured by the CBD oil inside or with coloured gelatine.
CBD Oil Gummies
CBD Oil Gummies are a popular and tasty way to consume CBD. CBD Oil Gummies combine a precise dose of CBD Oil with a small, tasty gummy candy such as a gummy bear, round gummy or gummy cube.
Gummies may be made with animal gelatine or a vegan alternative, and may be sweetened with sugar or an alternative natural or artificial sweetener.
Gummies are popular as a way to give CBD to children or other patients who don’t like oil tinctures, oral sprays or capsules.
Gummies typically contain low doses of CBD such as 5mg, 10mg or 25 mg.
CBD Oil Vape Liquid
CBD Oil Vape Liquid or Vape Juice is another popular way to consume CBD.
Most CBD Vape products contain small amounts of CBD Oil diluted in an eLiquid containing a VG (Vegetable Glycerine) and/or PG (Polyethylene Glycol) or similar diluents. These products are usually called CBD e-Liquids or CBD Vape Juice. CBD Content of these products is normally low, typically similar to or less than a CBD tincture – ie: 1% to 5% or even less.
Another type of CBD oil product used in vaping is CBD Vape Oil. These products are usually based on a CBD Oil concentrate such as CBD Distillate, and often contain 50% CBD or more. These products are quite potent but suffer the drawback that high concentrations of CBD may crystallise, especially with repeated heating and cooling as occurs in vape cartridges.
It should be noted that while CBD products are generally considered to be safe, vaping any eLiquid or other product has unknown safety, and care should be exercised.
Vape products are generally considered a recreational product, whereas the other products on this list are generally considered to be a medicine, health or wellness product.
CBD Oil Suppositories
CBD Oil Suppositories are an important category of CBD wellness products which are administered per-rectum. They contain CBD oil with a food grade diluent such as coconut oil, and can be thought of as being equivalent to a rectal tincture.
Suppositories are a highly effective method to deliver medicines like CBD which are subject to first-pass hepatic metabolism. Because rectal delivery goes straight to the bloodstream instead of being absorbed through the gut they achieve more rapid delivery and greater bioavailability.
CBD Oil Suppositories are particularly effective for pelvic and lower abdominal conditions such as menstrual pain, gynaecological conditions such as endometriosis, prostate problems and rectal and bowel conditions such as IBS, hip and leg pain etc.
Suppositories are not widely used in the US or English speaking countries as they are in Europe, but can be highly effective when indicated.
CBD Oil Water Soluble Powder
CBD Oil water soluble powders combine a CBD Oil with emulsifiers and other agents which convert it to a solid, powdered water soluble/miscible form. In this form CBD can readily be added to many different foods and liquids to allow highly versatile and convenient dosing.
Additionally, water miscible CBD is more rapidly absorbed and may offer greater bioavailability than normal CBD oil.
Note: CBD Oil is never truly soluble in water. These products allow CBD to mix with water, but will often separate out after standing leaving a visible oil layer floating on top of water.
CBD Oil Water Soluble Liquids
CBD Oil water soluble liquids combine a CBD Oil with emulsifiers and other agents in a liquid format which easily mixes with water and other beverages.
Thus they are similar to water soluble powders but in a liquid form.
These can be taken orally or mixed with foods or beverages for simple, convenient dosing.
CBD Water and CBD Oil Beverages
CBD Oil Beverages such as CBD Water utilise the same Water miscible CBD to offer ready-made CBD infused beverages. These can either come premixed or with a tablet or sachet which is added before drinking.
Note that the CBD may separate out so liquids should be shaken before drinking.
Also CBD can be inactivated by UV light and other factors so CBD water and beverages may not be stable in storage.
CBD Oil-infused Coffee and CBD Oil-infusedTeas
CBD Oil infused coffee and tea are a popular new category of product which combines CBD Oil (or a water miscible CBD product) with a popular beverage.
CBD infused coffee is often sold as single use coffee pods each containing a small dose (such as 10mg) of CBD.
CBD powders and liquids can also be added to normal coffee or tea after brewing.
CBD Oil Cream, Lotions, Salves and other Topical Products
CBD Oil Creams
CBD Oil Creams combine a lotion or cream (similar to sorbolene cream) with CBD oil allowing it to be rubbed into the skin or applied to an area of the body. CBD Oil creams are a topical product used for the treatment of skin conditions such as acne and for treating local injuries such as sprains or muscle pain. Specific products for joint and muscle pain (salves and muscle rubs) are also available.
CBD oil creams generally contain modest amounts of CBD (eg: 1-2%) and rub into the skin on the selected area.
CBD Lotions are similar to CBD Creams but lighter, and often have lower levels of CBD.
Some types of CBD oil topical products will be absorbed centrally, whereas others exert more local effect. A good understanding of the condition being treated and the ingredients will impact how much of the CBD is absorbed into the body.
CBD Oil Salves
CBD Oil salves are another type of topical product which is applied locally to treat the skin or associated lesions. It can be a balm, ointment, or cream. They are made with oils and waxes to create a semi-solid material. Salves often contain other herbal ingredients or beeswax to give it a distinctive scent and a semi-solid form.
CBD Oil Muscle Rubs
CBD Oil Muscle Rubs or liniments contain CBD Oil plus a liniment or rubbing alcohol and are used before, during or after exercise or injury to promote recovery. Muscle rubs often contain menthol, camphor, or other ingredients with therapeutic benefits and which stimulate circulation and a sense of heating or cooling.
CBD Oil Cosmetics
CBD Oil Cosmetics are also increasingly popular. From sunscreen to lip balm, CBD can provide local benefits in some cases, but is often used as a novelty ingredient which is unlikely to provide therapeutic benefit. As a current “fad” ingredient it is likely we’ll see many cosmetics containing CBD over the next few years.
CBD Oil Toiletries
CBD Oil toiletries include products such as bath bombs, soaps, body washes, shaving creams and other products. Some of these will function similarly to CBD creams and provide a topical (skin only) effect and may also be absorbed in some cases. Most of the CBD will likely not be absorbed and thus serves primarily as a novelty ingredient.
CBD Oils do contain other ingredients beyond CBD such as terpenes, many of which have pleasant scents or topical and aromatherapy effects, so even if all the CBD is not absorbed to produce therapeutic benefits there can be feel-good effects from using hemp CBD oil in toiletries.
