CBD Hemp Flower Cultivation

CBD Hemp Flower from USDA and State Farm Bill Hemp Programs

Hemp is defined in the United States and most regions as cannabis that contains less than 0.3% THC. Hemp includes specialised varieties of cannabis with low levels of THC which are often cultivated for industrial use. Some hemp plants have been specially bred, selected and grown for the production of hemp flower or cannabis resin to be used for the production of cannabis-derived medicines. High CBD Hemp Flower

High CBD Hemp flower is used for production of hemp and CBD products. Most hemp has small flowers with low levels of cannabinoids such as CBD and THC. High CBD hemp flower has been specially bred to select for larger flowers, more resin, and higher CBD content, while selecting for low THC levels to ensure the product can be harvested and shipped as legally compliant hemp.

Testing, Harvesting and Handling High CBD Hemp Flower

Legal and compliant production of high CBD hemp flower requires special high CBD hemp genetics, licenses, permits, cultivation practices and testing protocols. Failure to follow these during production means that the crop grown may exceed the legal limit (for example 0.3% THC). For example, seeds of high CBD hemp cultivars should be acquired from a suitable source who has scientifically validated their seed for factors such as CBD and THC production, germination rates and female:male ratios. The crop should then be tested during vegetative growth, and during flowering following the schedule required by regulators.

The dried plant or flowers must also be tested prior to sale and shipment to ensure it meets the criteria.

Difference between High CBD Hemp Flower and Marijuana

Hemp flowers may look and smell like marijuana in some cases, especially high CBD medical hemp varieties that have been trimmed for use as flower. Testing will differentiate hemp flower from marijuana, as Marijuana by definition has a THC level >0.3%.

Ensure you understand the tests required in your region (or in the region where you are purchasing or shipping product.) In particular, note that many jurisdictions require Total THC (THC + 0.87* THCA) is less than 0.3% - not Delta 9 THC alone.

Uses of Hemp Flower

Hemp flower has many uses with a long history of usage.

Hemp flower may be used:

  • As a herbal tea
  • As a food item, such as juicing or baking
  • As a smoking product or mixture, for example as a marijuana substitute if trying to cut back

Hemp flower usage as a tobacco substitute has become widespread in Europe, with Swiss and Italian sales of hemp cigarettes growing quickly. Other countries are starting to catch on as well.

Hemp Flower for CBD Extraction

Hemp flower can be extracted with solvents to concentrate the valuable CBD component. Read more about CBD extraction from hemp

Hemp flower for extraction should be high in CBD, low in THC and free of contaminants, adulterants and microbial growth.

Extracting CBD from hemp flower can be performed with a range of solvents including:

  • Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Extraction
  • Butane and other hydrocarbons
  • Ethanol
  • A range of other more toxic and dangerous solvents

Extraction of hemp flower produces a very high quality and potent CBD extract known as CBD oil or Hemp Oil. This can be further concentrated by removing impurities such as waxes, pigments, oils, terpenes and other components to produce more refined CBD concentrates such as distillate and isolate.

Extraction of CBD requires professional equipment and personnel to ensure a medical quality product is safely produced.

Other methods of hemp resin production such as bubble hash, hashish and rosin production can also be used to concentrate the CBD from hemp flower.

Note that all methods of  extraction are aimed at concentrating CBD but will also concentrate other cannabinoids such as THC. As a result extracts such as hemp oil, rosin or hashish may exceed the THC limit of 0.3% required to meet the definition of hemp - even though they came from a hemp flower that met those criteria.

High CBD Medical Hemp vs Industrial Hemp

An important consideration when selecting hemp flower or hemp biomass for CBD is the difference between high CBD Medical Hemp and true industrial hemp.

Over the last few years, medical cannabis growers, researchers and clinicians have developed new strains of high cannabinoid cannabis which meet the criteria for "Industrial Hemp".

Legally, hemp is derived as cannabis plants with less than 0.3% THC. Industrial hemp meets this criteria, but has very low cannabinoid levels overall - often around 2%. As a result it is a poor source of medicines, and extracting medicinally active compounds also extracts other pigments, waxes or toxins in the hemp.

These new strains of medical cannabis combine the benefits of medical cannabis (high cannabinoids, rich terpene profiles, large flowers, and heavy yields) with the ability to cultivate outdoor under industrial hemp licensing.

As a result, the United States now has an enormous medical hemp industry - where low THC medical cannabis plants can be legally grown as industrial hemp for medicines.

The law is complex and nuanced, so not all (or any) medical hemp is 100% legal but the industry flourishes nonetheless, and the United States has the best quality high CBD hemp flower in the world, with dozens of strains boasting CBD concentrations of 10% or more, even up to 20%+.

Smokeable High CBD Hemp Buds

This exceptional quality product produces such high quality flower that it is smoked much like cannabis - giving the appeal and benefits of marijuana but with near-zero THC. This product is in growing demand internationally, particularly in Switzerland where high CBD Hemp cannabis cigarettes are legal providing they have less than 1% ThC.

High CBD Hemp for Cannabis Oil Extraction

The most popular use for High CBD Hemp is to process into hemp-derived CBD oil for medicines.

High CBD Cannabis Oil from 10%+ flower can be 50%+ CBD, typically with low levels of THC (but note, these are sometimes over the 0.3% required by law in the USA.)

High CBD Hemp for Distillate

Cannabis oil can be further purified to concentrate CBD and remove THC. Hemp-derived CBD distillate typically contains around 75%+ CBD and ideally has >0.3% THC. Zero THC High CBD hemp is also available at a premium price.

High CBD Hemp for Isolate

High CBD hemp is also ideal for making CBD isolate. Hemp extractors love high CBD hemp with >10% CBD because it means they can extract more CBD in less time in smaller facilities.
Much of the CBD isolate on the market doesn't come from high CBD hemp though, because it's a bit of a waste. High CBD hemp is rich in other cannabinoids, terpenes and other medically beneficial compounds, which may be wasted when producing isolate. As a result, isolate is often produced from industrial hemp which cannot produce the same quality oil or distillate.
